Frequently Asked Questions

What is the United Way of Rockbridge?
UWR is a community-based not-for-profit corporation that is affiliated with United Way of America. It serves the communities of Rockbridge in providing financial support to other not-for-profit community service organizations. These organizations provide such services as: emergency aid; assistance to the elderly and to children and families; transportation to homebound people; medical, dental, and pharmaceutical service to uninsured lower-income people; and groceries and meals to people in need.

How is UWR tackling community problems?
UWR tackles community problems by providing financial support to local not-for-profit community service organizations.

Is UWR just a fundraiser?
Although fundraising is the primary function of UWR, we also work to be a general service provider for the community. UWR explores current and historic trends having to do with poverty, unemployment, hunger, healthcare, and overall economic development. We also act as an agent of communication between agencies, the city government, and the county.

How does an agency or organization become a United Way funding partner?
UWR’s application process for new funds begins in late January. UWR notifies the community that the application process has begun by publishing press releases in the local paper, on radio, and through regular mail. Agencies interested in funding are encouraged to call UWR. Interested agencies will next receive a funding distribution manual explaining the application process and requirements. This manual must be returned by the end of February. UWR reviews the applications, and sends out community reviewers to evaluate the needs and services of the organization in question. Taking in mind the budget and agency requests, the allocations committee, made up of members of the Board of Directors, determines funding for these agencies.

Where does the money that UWR raises go?
Not all the money that UWR raises goes to the agencies. About 20 to 25 percent of funds raised finance UWR’s overhead costs, which include rent and campaign costs. Our commitment to agencies comes out to about $187,500, and we are fortunate to make 100 percent of this commitment. UWR does not provide financial support to individuals.

Who decides how to spend the dollars raised byUWR’s fundraising efforts?
UWR’s Board of Directors organizes policy matters through their campaign committee.

Can I designate my gift?
Yes. UWR will pass on your donation to any agency, even if it is not affiliated with UWR.

What is UWR’s relationship with United Way of America?
UWR is a member of United Way of America. This allows UWR to use the United Way name, as well as requires UWR to pay an annual fee of one percent of intake.

Why should I give to United Way? Why not just donate directly to an agency?
In giving to UWR you are connected to the United Way cause. One gift provides support for a variety of local needs including assistance to the elderly and to children and families; transportation to homebound people; medical, dental, and pharmaceutical service to uninsured lower-income people; and groceries and meals to people in need.
